After complaints from a surprising number of people, I have decided to update my little blog.
I have been highly criticized for not writing a final Oz post detailing what I learned, what I loved, what I'll miss, etc. Summarizing and listing things online seems like it will oversimplify the experience and finalize it more than I'd like to.
I will simply say this...
A "good song" (symphony, improv session, whatever) will incorporate familiarity (providing security and comfort) and variety (which keeps us interested). The most skillful artists understand this balance and can draw the listener in emotionally and intellectually for the entire performance.
And it is, I think, this balanace that keeps us secure and interested in life. And that is why I loved my 6 months in Sydney. After a draining year or so in Houston, the "variety" of living abroad was absolutely exhilerating, yet it made me love that which is familiar all the more (family and friends, worship, journals, books...)
It is, of course, a bittersweet return to Texas. I'm here to finish my degrees by May, but I'm also here because I know this is where I belong. At least for now.
And that, my friends, is as good of a "i haven't posted from america in 7 months" update as you're going to get. I have many random blog-type thoughts on my mind, and some "tags" I'm being pressured to answer, but those will have to wait till another day.
