By request...

...here's this photo again.

Although we love our house, she doesn't seem to love us. The air conditioning broke today and it was miserably hot. The staircase light also broke, which is highly dangerous on the curvy, uneven, dark wooden stairs. But we still love her, and are convinced that in time, she will treat us well and love us, too. :)

Mirrors

I think I'm in the right place. My little sister affirmed this yesterday when I told her that one of my professors used to be Pink Floyd's booking agent. But my first clue came when Stephanie and I were talking in the kitchen last weekend...

As I listened to her explain why and how she left visual art "performance" to pursue arts admin, I could feel that heavy feeling that comes into your chest when something affirming happens. What a beautiful thing- to hear the words you've spoken over and over again to yourself now spoken aloud in someone else's voice. We were starting and finishing each other's sentences and it felt like I was looking into a mirror.

My class of 24 is a motley crew of artists-turned-business administrators. We're just enough artist to be in love with the arts and understand how artists work, think, and feel. But in the end, we're more devoted to promoting art in society and helping other artists than creating it ourselves.

There's much more to talk about (Sarah's birthday party/our house-warming party, my extremely loveable dean, biking in the rain, the Performing Arts Center, Chicago trip planning, etc...) but those things aren't nearly as exciting as just knowing that despite all the blind decision-making and doubting, God is sovereign and so good. And He's definitely put me in the right place.

Pictures.

Well, if grad school doesn't work out, I think I'll just make a living cleaning houses. I enjoy waking up in the morning, putting on grubby clothes, tying my hair back in a bandana, and setting to work. Even though the project is rather mindless, the physical work feels good and it's fun to embrace the splinters, the blisters, the dust and the dirt. The mornings have been beautiful so I'm able to open all the downstairs windows and as long as I have my music and a morning coffee break, I can work happily all day. But soon, I'll be back to my normal life of sitting for hours reading and studying.

Here are a few pics-
[I can't get the formatting to work correctly, but I don't care enough to keep fooling with it, so please forgive the mess.]

Lunch break in the living room on move-in day. (Not a very good picture of anyone. Sorry, guys.)

This is the Student Union building on the middle of campus. It has an old hotel inside, so that's where we stayed.

This is how you operate our old electric stove. It's pretty awesome.

Living room and dining room. I think this picture makes it look a bit smaller than it really is. Front door on the left; bathroom, kitchen, staircase and Sarah's room on the right. (Gran-O, look how pretty my downstairs floors turned out!)

The windows are probably my favorite thing about this house. Besides the fact that they open, there are just so many of them! (Seven just in the living/dining room alone.) And notice the gigantic tree in our front yard. My neighborhood is so green.

THINGS I'M PROUD OF:

#1: My curtain rods. I hung these by myself, listening to Frank Sinatra and using lots of manly tools.

#2: My flower boxes. There are two on either side of the front door under the windowsill. I bought and planted these mums all by myself yesterday. I had no idea what I was doing, but that didn't stop me. They might be dead tomorrow, but they sure are lovely today.
#3: My Texas piece. This was a gift from t
he wonderful Mr. and Mrs. Walt Ford. I dug a nice deep hole in my wall to hang this very important piece of home. It's right next to my bedroom door. So perfect. Thanks, you two!
More later.
Lots of love,
mich
